Kitty: I'm another Yankee fan who wishes it wasn't the BoSox receiving your wisdom this spring, but to their credit, it is. If it wasn't for the Red Sox, our Yankees wouldn't be as acclaimed as they have been through the years. To be great you need great opponents. What's the greatest rivalry you have been a part of?

Kitty.

The Red Sox? As a Yankees fan, I'm saddened because I know your insight and advice is going to help and improve their staff. If I was a pitcher today, I'd ask you to lunch every week to pick your brain. These pitchers are foolish not to talk pitching with you. I'm happy that you're back in the game, even if it is Boston.

I enjoy your stories and wisdom! I agree with your logic on pitching "Throw the clicker away" etc. We miss you on the Yankees broadcasts.

Just curious, because I respect your opinion - Who do you think invented the game? I was always told Doubleday, but there seems to be some conspiracy theories. Since I don't know for sure, I'll subscribe to whoever YOU think invented the game. If it's good enough for you, it's good enough for me!

Thanks for your time,
Vic

The Twins invited me to come in as a volunteer coach for a few days as they did last year.......the RedSox were the first organization in over 25 years...since Pete Rose asked me to be his pitching coach.... that actually got serious about having me share my ideas on pitching. Ben Cherington and Allard Baird and Bob McClure took the time to come to my home in Florida and interview me about my ideas and ask what I might be able 'd like to do to help..I was flattered by that..I enjoy giving back to the game in the field of pitching which is my only real area of expertise based on my own experiences.....I feel honored to try to justify their interest....

Jim, The hated Boston Red Sox? Come on now, why aren't you helping the Minnesota Twins, our pitchers could use your advice for sure. Francisco Liriano really needs a whole lot of help from a lefty like yourself. Take care of yourself Jim!

Thank you Kitty. All of the hype from the Far East in the past twenty years haven't amounted to much. Agree that Wang has probably had the most dominance, however, Nomo had a nice run for a brief period of time. Regarding Dice-K you are so right. I hated to watch him pitch and I'm Sox fan. His fastball was not up the hype and the famed gyroball was actually a change-screwball which was relatively ineffective against major league hitters.

I believe Darvish will have success because he is a big strong guy somewhat like Wang and throws strikes. Excited about how he will do once the season begins.

Another service you provided for baseball, and one I remember fondly, was your broadcasts of the College World Series.

I haven't had a TV in over 20 years, so I'm absolutely delighted to have found your blog.

The very best to, as you've always given the very best to baseball and its fans.

Jim, I have the utmost respect for you, and I loved the tenacity you brought to the Cardinals during your days there with Whitey.

But, i have a bone to pick with you. Your stated that...
"A lot of teams could win a World Series these days if they qualified by just having a streak like the Cardinals but you have to perform over six months — not just two weeks — to win a division."

They play 162. Games late in the year aren't worth more than games early in the year. The standings are final when all the games are played, right?

Now, consider this... StL had 26 blown saves. The problems they had in the bullpen were addressed, the bullpen was improved, and the Cards went into the stretch run with an improved team.

Suppose they hadn't blown 26 saves, Jim. Suppose they had only blown half of them. Add in a dozen or so wins that got away, and the little, weak, lucky wild card team has a 100 win season.

The truth is, clubs that are in the race have always tried to improve their roster down the stretch. Sellers and buyers after the break, right? StL got the pieces they needed to plug some holes and improve their team for a stretch run. We're talking about a team that could have won 100 games with a bullpen - and they had one at the end.

The Brewers weren't better. The Phillies weren't better. The Rangers weren't better. It wasn't just 2 weeks, Jim. They played the whole year, and, by the time they finished 162, they were the best team in baseball.

Thank you for sharing this. I agree with you on the voting. Some players who are not voted for boggle my mind. And that quote explains it very well.

I will be very interested to see how players like Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa and Roger Clemens are voted for next year.
